RCIA (the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is a process of welcome and exploration open to any adult who is considering becoming a member of the Roman Catholic Church or who wishes to complete the process of initiation into the full life of the Church. RCIA prepares adults to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and/or First Eucharist.
The first stage of the process is a period of introduction and inquiry during which candidates are encouraged to ask questions about any aspect of Catholic life that interests them or about which they have concerns. The second stage prepares adults for the reception of sacraments by providing all the information and spiritual support they need. The third stage is a time of proximate preparation for the sacraments which frequently coincides with the forty-day season of Lent prior to Easter. RCIA continues for a while after a person has become a full member of the Church so as to support the newly baptized and confirmed persons as they take their place in the Church. Throughout the process, catechumens (those who are seeking baptism) and candidates (baptized persons who are preparing for the other sacraments of initiation) are supported and guided by parishioners and clergy alike. They are encouraged to share their growing faith and to experience life in the Church by taking part in the full range of prayer, service and social activities of the parish.
While the RCIA process is primarily for adults seeking baptism, adaptations are made for baptized Christians of other denominations who are seeking to join the Catholic Church, for baptized Catholics who are seeking to complete their initiation into the faith, and for adolescents and older children who are preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation.
Adult RCIA sessions are generally held on Monday evenings. Inquiries may be made by contacting Fr. Charles Sammons( [email protected]).
