FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK….
From time to time questions about the music
selections for Sunday Mass arise. I thought that it might be
beneficial to use the Pastor’s Desk for the next several
weeks to speak about the importance and place of music in
Sunday Mass.
Overview:
Overall, the musical selections should encourage the
participation of the congregation. Music Ministers are
leaders of song. The word ‘leader’ implies that the faithful
join in and follow the ministers and their instructions. The
song numbers (not the Eucharistic acclamations) are
announced for the purpose of encouraging the congregation to
join in the singing. Musical selections for each Sunday
should be guided by the readings of the day, the season, and
the liturgical actions. The songs should speak of the
liturgical season. Lent, Advent and Ordinary Time should
have their own unique sound.
Next week’s topic: preludes.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Moe
