FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK….

On Monday we received the shocking word that Fr. Bernard Smith, O.F.M. Cap. had died in his sleep during the night. Fr. Bernard is well known here at the Heart after being assigned here in the 70’s and again in the 80’s. Fr. Bernard’s first assignment here at Sacred Heart was as associate pastor from 1970 until 1977. During this time he also served as administrator of the High School. He paid particular attention to the youth of the parish, fostering their growth so that they would achieve their full potential.

In 1977, Fr Bernard was appointed pastor of St. Joseph’s Church in Portland, Maine where he spent the next 6 years. He returned to Sacred Heart as pastor in September, 1981 and spent his time serving the people of Sacred Heart, joining with them not just for times of joy and sorrow but for every day events. His love of music and his wonderful singing voice enhanced the liturgies wherever he was. In 1987, he went on to be a hospital chaplain on Long Island. The friars then elected him vicar provincial under Fr. Gary McAuley in 1993. With Fr. Gary’s early death in 1995, Fr. Bernard assumed the position as provincial. He was then elected for two additional three year terms. Fr. Bernard’s leadership qualities were well respected both in the parish and in the province. He was a keen business man and was proud of his reputation for being what he identified as “frugal”.

Fr. Bernard is best known and loved for his jovial spirit, listening ear and generous heart which made him an excellent minister to all. Through these relationships, seeds of friendships were planted and later nurtured and flourished. Many have their own particular memories of Fr. Bernard and how he assisted them in their times of need. He will be remembered as a good pastor, a sharp businessman, a faithful friend, and he will be greatly missed.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Fr. Moe
